A Promising Vintage for Altair Estate: Margaret River Harvest Update

As we move through the early stages of the Margaret River harvest season, we are tracking well for our new vintage with typical timing. The moderate to warm weather has been conducive to ripening, though some varieties are progressing at different rates.

White Varietals:  Ripening has been progressing at a steady and consistent pace, ensuring balanced development across all varieties. Pinot Grigio is nearing full colour change, with flavour complexity continuing to build. Vermentino is displaying bright, fresh acidity, with flavour depth still evolving. Sauvignon Blanc is showing an interesting ripening pattern, with some berries maturing swiftly while others retain their crisp acidity, enhancing its characteristic grassy notes.
Red Varietals: This season is shaping up to be an excellent year for Altair Estate’s red wines. Overall, ripening is progressing ahead of expectations, with strong flavour intensity already showing so soon after veraison. Merlot is showing early signs of sugar accumulation, though seeds and acidity remain green, indicating a long ripening period ahead. Cabernet Sauvignon is slightly ahead of expectations, too, with great flavour and tannin development despite some uneven ripening. Sangiovese has more fruit exposure than normal, increasing intensity of flavour and acid freshness. Nebbiolo remains extremely green and tight, but its lighter canopy will allow for slow, steady ripening over the next months. Meanwhile, our Malbec is fully through veraison but still needs time for flavour progression.
With careful vineyard management and the ability to extend hang time for optimal structure, we anticipate a standout vintage for Altair Estate. Stay tuned for further updates as the season unfolds!
