Best Pinot Grigio Wine in Australia

This wine is fresh, energetic, and vibrant. The pale-yellow colour hand out the citrus profile like lemon peel, green apple and crispy pear accompanied by savory tones such as blanched almonds, black tea and a note of fresh sage. When you taste the wine, the first thing you notice is that striking zesty acidity, which is alluring. On the palate its character maintains its fresh characteristics like white nectarine, cantaloupe, aniseed, and honeysuckle attend the aromas earlier picked up on the nose. The texture and complexity of the wine reveals the use of skin contact. This light bodied wine represents everything that it should.

Best Vermentino Wine in Australia

This Vermentino shows in the glass a bright and clear pale yellow-green colour. An alluring nose of green rock melon, sweet and tangy mangosteen followed by that typical crispy green and red apple. It shows off its youthfulness. The aromas picked up in the nose moves further to the palate. You fall into a soft bed of dried roses and chamomile while that tropical fruit salad presents itself. It is shaped and framed, and goes all the way through, from the front of your palate to the back. It has volume and capacity, yet still subtle. The residual sugar in the wine gives you that gentle texture and it accompanies that prominent acidity very well, as it invites you to have another taste.

When we look at Vermentino the aim is to balance the racy acidity with an off-dry palate. It represents the ability of the variety with the freshness being the soul that expresses a summer and beach vibrancy. The focus during picking Vermentino is to represent that crunchy acidity and the subtle flavour expression of this grape varietal. This Vermentino flatters with oyster, saline nuances in food and it embraces Asian cuisine.

The delicate nose journeys to a juicy palate filled with notes of white pear and grapefruit, with hints of minerality, highlighted by a slight sweetness on the finish that leaves you wanting more. Well balanced acid dances across the tastebuds to create a sense of mid-palate structure that encourages the subtle mouthfeel with a medium length distinctive to Altair Estate. This light, low alcohol, wine should be enjoyed by itself in the sun, or paired with fresh oysters by the sea.

Our aim is to create a fresh and textured wine. The skin of the Pinot Grigio gives the winemaker a unique opportunity to create a Rosé that is distinctive in its colour and complexity. Machine harvesting and three days of fermentation on skins gives this wine its colour, unique flavours, and structural tannins. When the desired texture is reached the fermentation is continued in stainless-steel tanks without the skins until dry. To elevate fragrance and enhance mouthfeel, the wine spends six weeks on Vermentino lees, with minimal battonage.

The conditions in Margaret River are quite consistent looking at the coastal influence, temperature, and overall Mediterranean climate. Weather in the first week of February was mild and rain fell, providing welcome relief for the vineyards and was a great timing for the later ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon, the classic grape varietal for Margaret River better known as the King of the reds, this vintage blended with Merlot, Nebbiolo and Malbec.

For vintage 2022, it provided a fantastic vintage. Sangiovese, the famously native grape varietal to Tuscany, responsible for the well-known wines such as Brunello de Montalcino and Chianti. With this wine we want to enhance strong expression of Sangiovese varietal characters. Slightly chilled in an oversized glass, that collects aromas but allows the wine to open, which is how we recommend to drink it.

Merlot, or how the French say, “young blackbird”. For vintage 2021, it provided a milder Margaret River vintage. Excellent growing conditions for vines and producing fruit with fantastic intensity. The Merlot 181 clone can ripen longer, has finer tannins and a natural dark fruit character, the grapes for this vintage were picked at an optimal ripeness with a natural acidity present.

On the nose it’s elevated and perfumed with notes of dark cherry, blackcurrant combined with graphite and eucalyptus. That generous energy of dark fruit meets the palate with violet, fennel seed and hay. The use of American and French oak promotes tannins that have a firm astringency on the finish, so allow this wine to breathe, open and unfold. This wine goes well with red meat, charcuterie, and soft cheese.

A good part of the vintage growing season happens in the prior year. The growing season was a mild spring in 2020, with reasonable but not extreme rainfall, which are excellent growing conditions for vines and producing fruit with fantastic intensity.  This year the Malbec grapes were picked slightly riper to allow a higher sugar and concentrated flavour development. A full-bodied wine that has all the features to be enjoyed with steak, a chocolate dessert or on a cold day in front of a fireplace.
