Flowering in the Vineyard: A Crucial Stage in the Vineyard's Life Cycle
In the lifecycle of a grapevine, flowering is a significant milestone, indicating the transition from vegetative growth to fruit production. Taking place in late spring to early summer, flowering determines the potential yield and quality of the harvest, making it a crucial moment for Altair Estate’s vineyard team and winemaker.
Flowering begins with the emergence of tiny, green, bud-like structures on the vine’s shoots. These are inflorescences, clusters that will eventually bear fruit. Over several days, the protective caps fall away to reveal the delicate flowers beneath. Pollination occurs when the flowers are fertilised, leading to the development of the fruit for our handcrafted wines.
During this stage, heavy rain, strong winds, or unseasonably cool temperatures can disrupt flowering. Rain can wash away pollen or prevent the flowers from opening, while extreme heat can cause the flowers to wither. Such conditions may result in poor fruit set or uneven berry development. The ideal weather for this stage includes warm temperatures, calm winds, and dry conditions, which create the perfect environment for pollination and fruit set. We are fortunate to have these consistent conditions in the Wilyabrup, which makes it a renowned and successful part of the Margaret River wine region.
The results of flowering directly influence the yield for next year’s vintage, and therefore, our boutique wines. A successful fruit set ensures balanced clusters with even ripening, critical for producing high-quality wine. Therefore, the Altair Estate team closely monitors conditions during flowering and practices canopy management, such as trimming excess foliage to improve airflow and sunlight exposure and prevent diseases during this vulnerable stage.
As flowering progresses to fruit set, the vines enter a new phase of nurturing the young fruit. Each cluster of fruit carries the potential to capture the essence of the season, reflecting our wine region’s unique terroir. For Altair Estate, flowering is a time of joy and anticipation, a crucial stage in the journey from vine to glass, where every decision influences the story of the vintage.
