Fumé-style Sauvignon Blanc is not a new concept globally, but it remains a rare and exciting style in the Australian wine landscape. Originating from the Loire Valley in France, particularly the Pouilly – Fumé region, this style is traditionally known for its flinty, smoky notes created through careful oak ageing. The name “Fumé” means “smoked” in French, referring to the subtle toasted characters that oak imparts, as well as the mineral complexity the grape can express in cooler climates. At Altair, we’ve embraced this historical influence and applied it through the lens of Margaret River’s unique maritime climate and our own winemaking philosophy.
Our Sauvignon Blanc Fumé 2023 showcases just how vibrant and layered this style can be in the southwest. The nose bursts with spicy-sweet clove, guava and tropical fruits, unfolding into violet floral intensity and ripe peaches, all lifted by strong natural acidity. On the palate, it’s soft and textural, with a medium body and a long, refreshing line of acidity. Gentle oak toast lingers on the finish, complemented by undertones of lemon myrtle and ripe lime that add zest and energy. A subtle framing of sweet oak adds depth and complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Winemaker Josh Vince shares his passion for the style: “Fumé is a wine style I get really excited about working with. It encompasses everything I value in winemaking – respectful vineyard practices, time on skins and texture. It gives me the chance to create something that’s expressive and honest to both the fruit and the land.”
This wine has been crafted for those who seek something a little different – an alternative style that balances freshness with complexity. It’s equally at home next to a creamy pasta or alongside spicy dishes, where its aromatic lift and vibrant acidity create a harmonious food pairing experience.
The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Fumé represents more than just a new vintage – it signals a commitment to innovation at Altair Estate, to working with texture, oak and varietal nuance to push the boundaries of what’s expected from Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a wine for the curious, the adventurous and those who value wines that speak of both place and process.
