About Vintage 2023 - Sangiovese

Sangiovese, the famously native grape varietal to Tuscany responsible for some of the most well-known wines, such as Chianti. Marking the latest picking date for this grape variety for this vintage, it benefited from a moderate extended ripening period. With this wine we want to enhance strong expression of Sangiovese varietal characters. A stylistic choice was made to create a softer, more concentrated fruit-driven wine. Slightly chilled in an oversized glass, that collects aromas but allows the wine to open, which is how we recommend drinking it.

Tasting Notes

This estate-grown Sangiovese displays a pale ruby colour. The concentrated aromas of sweet red and dark fruits transition smoothly from nose to palate, with ripe Amarena cherries, raspberries and strawberries taking centre focus. A subtle spice undertone of cardamom, white pepper and coriander seeds adds complexity to the back palate. The wine's high concentration unfolds from the front to mid-palate, leading into firm yet fine tannins.

  • Vintage Notes

Optimal and dry weather conditions set the tone for a moderate 2023 - it proved to be an extended yet rewarding vintage without any significant climate challenges or disease pressure. This moderate climate is classic and ideal for gentle and consistent ripening.

The temperature in winter was lower than average which resulted in a relative longer dormancy for the vines and caused a delayed start in development by about 2-3 weeks. Rainfall was less than average yet the vines received enough to keep the soil moist and getting ready for a propitious growing season ahead.

Cooler conditions and less rain in spring result in a slower start for canopy to grow. Fruit-set of the vines were good and resulted in generally higher yields. With low rain in November and less than 2 mL of rain across the following three months, spring emerges into an even drier and consistently warm summer. Although the vines are starting to catch up nicely on their development there is still a 2-3 weeks later veraison for the white- and one week for the red grape varietals.

We started our harvest in February, a dry and sunny month with no extremely high temperatures. Overall, the cool mornings and nights during this period helped retain the natural acidity in the fruit whilst the warmer temperatures during the day helped the grapes to ripen slow and even. The challenge this year was again the scarce of Marri tree blossom, which made the grapes an easy target for native birds.

The red varietals needed more time for tannins to soften and fully flavour development as the temperatures were marginally cooler in April. With this despite minor weather events and being pushed and raced against season’s end, we look back at an excellent growing season.

  • Winemaking

The Sangiovese was harvested on the 28th of March, marking the latest picking date for this variety. Despite the extended ripening period, conditions remained moderate, with no excessive heat stress on the vines. The grapes for the 2023 vintage were crushed and transferred into a stainless-steel tank for fermentation. A Sangiovese-specific yeast and fruit enzymes were used to enhance red fruit characteristics. After a five-day fermentation on the skins with daily pump-overs, we opted for svinatura rather than pressing. This stylistic choice was made to create a softer, more fruit-driven wine. Following alcoholic fermentation, full malolactic fermentation was initiated separately in tank to ensure precise control. The wine was then filtered, fined, and bottled.
