When we look at Vermentino the aim is to balance the racy acidity with an off-dry palate. It represents the ability of the variety with the freshness being the soul that expresses a summer and beach vibrancy. The focus during picking Vermentino is to represent that crunchy acidity and the subtle flavour expression of this grape varietal. This Vermentino flatters with oyster, saline nuances in food and it embraces Asian cuisine.

This modern style Vermentino presents a pale straw colour that is bright and clear. On the nose aromas of ripe red apple, hints of rockmelon and key lime are complemented by a touch of Jasmine. The palate expresses juicy fruit with flavours of white pear and grapefruit. Well-balanced acidity, complemented by a touch of sweetness, contributes to a structured mid-palate distinctive to Altair Estate. Its refreshing character sparkles on the finish, inviting another sip. This light, crisp and fruity wine is perfect for enjoying on its own or paired perfectly with fresh oysters by the sea.

For 2022 the grapes were picked slightly riper for concentrated flavour development that goes towards a tropical spectrum. This Sauvignon Blanc distinguishes itself from others in the region. Altair Estate presents a style that is full bodied with a deep lemon colour. Best served in a Burgundy glass that collects aromas but allows the wine to open. Goes with seafood, white meat and goat cheese or drink just by itself.

Tasting Notes

Altair Estate presents a style that is full bodied with a deep lemon colour. A layered nose of dried lime, mango, grapefruit peel, earl grey and sweet quince. On the palate there is a natural punchy acidity typical for this varietal. Textural impact due to skin contact and the use of French and Hungarian oak. The palate correlates with the aromas earlier picked up on the nose and is defined by a fresh saline finish.

Our aim is to create a fresh and textured wine. The skin of the Pinot Grigio gives the winemaker a unique opportunity to create a Rosé that is distinctive in its colour and complexity. Machine harvesting and three days of fermentation on skins gives this wine its colour, unique flavours, and structural tannins. When the desired texture is reached the fermentation is continued in stainless-steel tanks without the skins until dry. To elevate fragrance and enhance mouthfeel, the wine spends six weeks on Vermentino lees, with minimal battonage.

Produced from the dark Pinot Grigio grape this wine exhibits a unique copper colour. Inspired by creating a complex and textured Rosé – this wine expresses its own outstanding characteristics. Aromas of watermelon and rose petal are distinct and engaging on the nose. On the palate there is detail of cumin and coriander spices, plum marmalade, raspberry and cherry. Skin and lees contact add another dimension of depth and savoury drinkability whilst the phenolic structure is teasing and tactile, creating a finish with layers and length. This textural and food-friendly wine finds its harmony paired with prosciutto, crustaceans, and Asian cuisines.

The conditions in Margaret River are quite consistent looking at the coastal influence, temperature, and overall Mediterranean climate. Weather in the first week of February was mild and rain fell, providing welcome relief for the vineyards and was a great timing for the later ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon, the classic grape varietal for Margaret River better known as the King of the reds, this vintage blended with Merlot, Nebbiolo and Malbec.

Pale ruby in the glass. This is all about fragrance and perfume. Notes of red cherry and mulberry meet savoury green capsicum, black olives, and camphor. It tastes of dark fruit character surrounded by eucalypt, oak, and a dried sage lift. A clean definition of the acidity and with the allowance to breathe textural tannins unfold within the glass. Pairs best with meat dishes like steak, venison stew, roast beef, and roasted lamb.

Sangiovese, the famously native grape varietal to Tuscany responsible for some of the most well-known wines, such as Chianti. Marking the latest picking date for this grape variety for this vintage, it benefited from a moderate extended ripening period. With this wine we want to enhance strong expression of Sangiovese varietal characters. A stylistic choice was made to create a softer, more concentrated fruit-driven wine. Slightly chilled in an oversized glass, that collects aromas but allows the wine to open, which is how we recommend drinking it.

This estate-grown Sangiovese displays a pale ruby colour. The concentrated aromas of sweet red and dark fruits transition smoothly from nose to palate, with ripe Amarena cherries, raspberries and strawberries taking centre focus. A subtle spice undertone of cardamom, white pepper and coriander seeds adds complexity to the back palate. The wine’s high concentration unfolds from the front to mid-palate, leading into firm yet fine tannins.

Merlot, or how the French say, “young blackbird”. For vintage 2021, it provided a milder Margaret River vintage. Excellent growing conditions for vines and producing fruit with fantastic intensity. The Merlot 181 clone can ripen longer, has finer tannins and a natural dark fruit character, the grapes for this vintage were picked at an optimal ripeness with a natural acidity present.

On the nose it’s elevated and perfumed with notes of dark cherry, blackcurrant combined with graphite and eucalyptus. That generous energy of dark fruit meets the palate with violet, fennel seed and hay. The use of American and French oak promotes tannins that have a firm astringency on the finish, so allow this wine to breathe, open and unfold. This wine goes well with red meat, charcuterie, and soft cheese.

A good part of the vintage growing season happens in the prior year. The growing season was a mild spring in 2020, with reasonable but not extreme rainfall, which are excellent growing conditions for vines and producing fruit with fantastic intensity.  This year the Malbec grapes were picked slightly riper to allow a higher sugar and concentrated flavour development. A full-bodied wine that has all the features to be enjoyed with steak, a chocolate dessert or on a cold day in front of a fireplace.

When you look at the purple to ruby colour with that magenta rim it tells you something about the grape varietal. You discover in this wine, next to rhubarb marmalade, star anise, violets, vanilla, and butterscotch a wide range of powerful fruit aromas like blackberries, redcurrant, and cherries. On the palate you identify that this luscious wine has the same energy, fresh and intense aromas as on the nose. Drink the wine slightly cooler than room temperature in a large Bordeaux glass and you will have a smooth and supple finish with silky tannins across your tongue.
